Abstrak

Hypertension remains a major public health concern due to its long-term complications and the difficulty many patients experience in maintaining consistent lifestyle modification. Although pharmacological treatment is essential, effective hypertension control also depends on patients’ knowledge and the supportive role of families in daily self-care practices. This study aimed to examine the association between family roles, patient knowledge, and healthy lifestyle practices among patients with hypertension in the working area of Barombong Public Health Center, Makassar, Indonesia. A quantitative analytic study with a cross-sectional design was conducted in January 2026. The study population consisted of 222 patients with hypertension, from which 157 respondents were selected using the Slovin formula and non-probability sampling based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were collected using structured questionnaires assessing family roles, knowledge, and healthy lifestyle practices. The data were analyzed using univariate analysis and the Chi-Square test with a significance level of 0.05. The findings showed that 63.7% of respondents had good knowledge, 52.9% reported good family roles, and 58.0% demonstrated good healthy lifestyle practices. Respondents with good knowledge were more likely to practice a healthy lifestyle than those with poor knowledge. The Chi-Square test indicated a significant association between knowledge and healthy lifestyle practices among patients with hypertension (p = 0.007). Similarly, respondents with good family roles showed better healthy lifestyle practices than those with poor family roles, with a statistically significant association (p = 0.004). These findings suggest that knowledge and family roles are important factors associated with healthy lifestyle practices in hypertension management. Strengthening family-centered education and continuous health promotion in primary health care may improve self-management behavior and support long-term blood pressure control among patients with hypertension
