BRINGING BIOLOGY TO LIFE: DEVELOPING CANVA-ASSISTED ANIMATED COMICS FOR HUMAN SYSTEM LEARNING

Abstrak

Innovative learning media are needed to address challenges in biology education, particularly in teaching complex topics that require high levels of student imagination and conceptual understanding. Based on preliminary observations at SMAS Muhammadiyah Jayapura, students experienced difficulties in learning the human respiratory system due to the abstract nature of the material and the limited use of engaging instructional media. This study aimed to develop, evaluate, and determine the effectiveness of Canva-assisted animated comic learning media on the topic of the human respiratory system. This research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the Four-D (4D) model, consisting of the stages of Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate. The developed media were validated by subject matter experts and media experts. Practicality testing involved one biology teacher and students through a small-scale trial (12 students) and a large-scale trial (35 students). The effectiveness of the media was measured using pre-test and post-test scores, analyzed through N-Gain and paired sample t-test. The results indicated that the Canva-assisted animated comic learning media achieved a high level of validity, with scores of 92.22% from material experts and 81.25% from media experts. The practicality assessment showed highly positive responses, with scores of 88.57% from the biology teacher and 93.57% from students, categorizing the media as very practical. Furthermore, the media demonstrated effectiveness in improving students’ learning outcomes, as evidenced by an N-Gain score of 62.58%, which falls within the moderately effective category. The paired sample t-test revealed a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a statistically significant improvement in students’ learning outcomes after using the developed media. In conclusion, the Canva-assisted animated comic learning media is valid, practical, and effective for teaching the human respiratory system and can serve as an innovative instructional tool to enhance student engagement and learning achievement in biology education
