STUDENT ENGAGEMENT IN BLENDED LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW OF EFFECTIVE DESIGN STRATEGIES AND PEDAGOGICAL IMPLICATIONS

Background: Blended learning has emerged as one of the most transformative instructional paradigms in higher education. However, the specific design elements and pedagogical strategies that most effectively foster student engagement remain insufficiently understood. Objective: This study aimed to identify effective blended learning designs and pedagogical strategies that promote behavioral, cognitive, and affective dimensions of student engagement. Methodology: This study employed a systematic review approach following the PRISMA protocol. A total of 42 peer-reviewed studies published between 2004 and 2024 were selected from ERIC, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. Results: Findings revealed that teacher–student interaction is the strongest predictor of engagement, followed by active learning activities such as collaborative problem-solving and peer discussion. Learning management systems, instructional videos, and interactive polling tools enhance engagement when intentionally integrated into course design. Socioeconomic status, digital literacy, and institutional infrastructure were identified as significant moderating variables. Conclusion: Effective blended learning environments require intentional instructional design, meaningful interaction, and appropriate technological integration to maximize student engagement.
